Pasar Markets are necessity in a society where refrigeration and stores are not yet widespread. Markets are a refreshing slice of real Bali, away from the suntan oil and dvd movies. The housewives still make their way to the public market before dawn. Markets are the women's club of Bali where goods and gossips are exchanged. Markets are usually located on the bussiest intersection of the village closed to village temple or the palace, the centre of the village also signified by the banyan tree, sometimes market lie down on its shade. A small market may be just a row of makeshift stalls on a dusty lane off the main road. Long time ago, in a village, market are held every three days and the next day the villagers will go to the neighbouring village as the market day rotate amongst these three village but these roving portable stands and mat are nearly extict. Now the villagers favor to come to the district markets as the price cheaper or more collections of goods. Pasar Badung is one of the famous market in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, market is housed in a huge square and multi storied cement block where the stench is unbearable and rubbish piles are everywhere. |
