Penjor Penjor is set-up as an important part of the religious celebration. A penjor is made of a whole bamboo tree without branches or leaves. It is decorated with young coconut leaves, especially cut and turned into various shapes. Colourful leaves also find their way to make it more beautiful. The real penjor for the Hindu holiday also have coconut, bananas, edible roots and rice cakes hanging on the upper part. Another type of penjor devoid of these kinds of food stuffs is used for different purposes such as decorations during the government ceremonies, visit of state guests, or international sport competitions. They don't have religious significant. Penjor can add a lot of beauty to the places used for special events. They say that the religious penjor, the one carrying the procedure of the island, is a form or materialization of the gratitude of the people to the God. Further, they believed that a penjor is a kind of thanksgiving. It symbolizes the snake of Anantha Bogha means endless food, the penjor does like a big snake in the traditional paintings of the Hindu epic of Mahabharata. Other believed that a penjor looks like a cone which represents the mountain, the dwelling place of God, as God is the giver of life and food, perhaps it is right that a penjor is a symbol of prosperity. |
