Swastika

Swastika is believed originated from Asia, in China this symbol had been used long before Budha was born (563 B.C), and from Asia Swastika was then introduced to west Europe at the bronze age (300 B.C-100A.D), it was even introduced to America.

Swastika is etimologically derived from SU + ASTI + KA, su means well, wellfare, asti means to be or being and suffix ka is used to form a noun. so Swastika implies in the state of happiness, peace and welfare, it is the symbol of good fortune.

Originally, the form of Swastika was two lines crossing each other called Tampak Dara, it has been used for symbol of protection since long time, for instance, when there is a epidemic, this sign is drawn on a gate or door of the sleeping quarter. We usually use limestone to make the sign, because of its protective power or sometimes drawn by red saliva, the saliva of those who chew bettle leave and areca nut)

We can enhance our belief in the almighty by using Swastika symbol, it is the symbol of Brahman (God) as the source of everything who give us peace and welfare. Therefore, in Bali on religious occassions one often finds the sign painted on baskets, trays or any other accessories.
