The Family Compound

While the village is open and communal, the Balinese home is sorrounded by the wall and private. The connected gate is the only one for entrance and exit, on it attached statistic board written the name of the name of community, village, district, region, the name of the head of the family, total of people living in the compound and the compound number.

The Balinese beleive each part of the house corresponds to a part of the human anatomy :
the head is the family shrine, the sexual organ is the gate, the arms are the bed rooms, the navel is the courtyard, the legs and the feet are the kitchen and the rice granary and the anus is the backyard garbage pit
